SHREWSBURY, MA — Town officials are warning residents and businesses about fraudulent emails targeting people who submit online permitting and licensing applications.

The emails impersonate the town and include falsified invoices requesting wire payments for fees that do not exist, according to Shrewsbury officials. Similar scams have been reported in communities nationwide, the town said.

Legitimate application fees are paid through Shrewsbury's OpenGov Self-Service platform. Applicants receive payment notifications from noreply@opengov.com and make payments while logged into their OpenGov account or in person at Town Hall.

The town said it will never request payment by wire transfer.

Anyone who receives a suspicious email or invoice that does not direct them to the OpenGov portal should not click any links or respond to the message. Officials advised recipients to delete the email.

Town staff are tracking the scam and will provide updates as necessary.
