SHREWSBURY, MA — Planning for a potential expansion and renovation of Shrewsbury High School is moving forward.
The town selected SMMA as the project architect and PMA Consultants as the owner's project manager, Shrewsbury Public Schools announced in its October newsletter.
A feasibility study and Preliminary Design Program began this month to evaluate the school's educational and facility needs, explore potential solutions and address severe overcrowding.
Shrewsbury High School had 1,899 students as of Oct. 1, 2025, according to a town project FAQ.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority calculated a design enrollment of 1,940 students through 2035. That is 690 students, or 55 percent, above the building's contemporary design capacity of 1,250.
The potential project would also address aging building systems, including the roof, windows and heating and ventilation equipment.
The MSBA received 119 statements of interest across its programs in 2024. Shrewsbury High School was among only 22 schools invited into the agency's eligibility period.
Town Meeting authorized $3 million for the feasibility and schematic design process in October 2025. The MSBA is expected to reimburse 52.26 percent of eligible study costs, leaving an estimated net cost of about $1.4 million for the town if the entire appropriation is spent.
No construction plan, budget or funding package has been approved. The study will focus on expanding and renovating the existing high school rather than constructing a new building.
Students, staff, families and community members will have opportunities to provide input as planning continues.
