SHREWSBURY, MA — A Shrewsbury resident marked a rare milestone Tuesday with an official proclamation from the town.
Bob Ghiz celebrated his 100th birthday at Benchmark Senior Living at Shrewsbury Crossings, where Select Board member Anand Sharma presented the proclamation on behalf of the board, the town announced on Monday. The proclamation recognized Ghiz's centenary and milestone birthday.
"To mark his centenary, Select Board member Anand Sharma presented Bob with an official town proclamation from the Select Board, recognizing this milestone birthday," the town wrote in its announcement. "Turning 100 is no everyday occurrence, so it was truly special to celebrate this occasion with him."
He lives at Shrewsbury Crossings, which is an assisted living residence at 311 Main St.
Ghiz joins a small share of Americans who have reached age 100. The U.S. had 80,139 centenarians in 2020, representing about two of every 10,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The town invited community members to join in wishing Ghiz a happy birthday.
