SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury will receive a $15,000 state grant to identify ways to improve energy efficiency in municipal buildings.

The Department of Energy Resources awarded the funding for an ASHRAE Level II audit, an in-depth review of building systems that identifies potential energy-saving improvements. The grant was announced Wednesday as part of more than $1 million awarded by the Healey-Driscoll administration for local clean energy projects across Massachusetts.

Shrewsbury's funding comes through the Municipal Energy Technical Assistance grant program. The program helps municipalities, regional school districts and water and wastewater districts hire consultants and contractors to plan clean energy projects, reduce fossil fuel use and lower long-term costs.

The state awarded more than $305,000 in technical assistance grants to 16 local governments. Other projects funded through the program include solar and battery storage designs, heating and cooling system specifications, building retro-commissioning and assistance with energy-saving performance contracts.

"We want to help every city and town in Massachusetts lower energy costs, reduce pollution and build a cleaner, more affordable energy future," Gov. Maura Healey said. "These grants will help communities move forward with projects that save taxpayer dollars and deliver lasting benefits for residents."
