SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury's newest full-time animal control officer has been recognized for his commitment to animal welfare and fellow officers.
Shrewsbury Animal Control Officer Matt DeCiero received the Paul Murphy Golden Bone Award during the Animal Control Officers Association of Massachusetts' recent annual meeting.
"This prestigious award recognizes an ACOAM member who goes above and beyond the call of duty through outstanding dedication and commitment to the organization's mission," the Shrewsbury Police Department wrote in a Tuesday announcement. "Beyond his daily responsibilities, Matt has made a lasting impact by participating in community events, providing educational outreach, sharing important animal welfare information, and mentoring the next generation of Animal Control Officers. "
According to the ACOAM, the award recognizes "dedication and efforts to promote professionalism through Animal Control" in a municipality. To win, the officer must be actively involved in their community, serve as a role model to others, go above and beyond the requirements of the job, and be an ACOAM member in good standing.
DeCiero joined the Shrewsbury Police Department full-time on Aug. 31 after four years serving communities across Massachusetts. He previously worked as the Rutland Regional Animal Control Officer, supporting several departments, and as Chelmsford's animal control officer.
DeCiero recently volunteered to attend every class of this year's Animal Control Officer Academy, where he helped prepare officers entering the profession, according to the Shrewsbury Police Department.
The department said DeCiero's work supporting other officers, educating the public and advocating for animals reflects his commitment to the profession.
