SHREWSBURY, MA — Thousands of gallons of untreated sewage flowed into Lake Quinsigamond on Thursday after an overflow at a Shrewsbury pump station, according to the town's Department of Public Works.
The overflow began at 9:30 a.m. at the Harvey Place Sewer Pump Station and ended around 11 a.m. The town estimated the discharge at 24,000, although its notice did not specify a unit of measurement.
Both Shrewsbury and Worcester were listed as affected communities.
Following the overflow, town officials advised residents to avoid contact with Lake Quinsigamond for 48 hours due to potential health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
The advisory period ended at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The town confirmed that the overflow had stopped by the time the notice was issued. While the reported start and end times cover 90 minutes, the town listed the discharge duration as 80 minutes.
Residents can find more information on the town's sanitary sewer overflow webpage.
