Assabet Student from Shrewsbury Accepted to ACE at Northeastern

Three students from Assabet are headed to Northeastern.

Submitted by Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School

Stone Teele, Marlborough, Matt Vavruska, West Boylston and Matt
Jefferson, Shrewsbury, will be leading two lives next year in the Computer
Programming and Web Development program at Assabet Valley. All three
sophomores were recently accepted into ACE, the Academy for College
Excellence program in conjunction with Northeastern University’s College of
Professional Studies. Using a flexible schedule during their technical week, the
students will be earning high school credit while being enrolled in a series of
hybrid courses taught by Northeastern professors.

The students each had to complete an application packet, which included
a recommendation from his current vocational/technical instructor and a
recommendation from an academic teacher and a writing sample. There
was also an interview.  Each of the applicant’s school performance was also
reviewed.

After a two day orientation held at the Warren Conference Center last week,
students will have a few weeks of summer vacation before the first course starts
in July. There is no fee for the program at this time, as it is part of the Race to the Top grant money that the school received. 9 other technical high schools with a  Chapter 74 approved Computer Programming course also have students in this program.
