GRAFTON, MA—This spring's MCAS scores have been released, and Grafton scored well above the state average in English and science.

Below are the results from the sophomore exams in math, science and English, by percent of students to score:

English

Proficient or Higher:
Grafton- 96 percent
State - 78 percent

Advanced:
Grafton - 66 percent
State - 54 percent

Proficient:
Grafton - 31 percent
State - 24 percent

Needs Improvement:
Grafton - 3 percent
State - 15 percent

Warning/Failing:
Grafton - 0 percent
State - 8 percent

Proficient or Higher:
Grafton - 88 percent
State - 91 percent
Advanced:
Grafton- 68 percent
State - 47 percent
Proficient:

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 mandates that every student be proficient in English language arts and math by 2014. In Massachusetts, this proficiency is measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).

A school must improve in proficiency each year based on adequate yearly progress (AYP). In Massachusetts, AYP is determined by student performance on various parts of the MCAS.
