Hannah Kane Sworn in as State Representative

Hannah Kane is the State Representative for Shrewsbury and precincts 4 and 5 in Westborough.

Boston — Hannah Kane was sworn in by Governor Baker on April 8th as State Representative for the 11th Worcester District, encompassing all of Shrewsbury and Precincts 4 and 5 in Westborough, after winning the seat in the March 31st special election. Ms. Kane replaces Matt Beaton, who resigned after being appointed by Governor Baker as Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

The ceremony took place before the full House of Representatives, her two predecessors, former Representative Beaton and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, members of Kane’s family, friends and supporters who filled the House gallery to witness the event.

Kane made her maiden speech to the House following her swearing in, recalling wisdom learned from former Lieutenant Governor Paul Cellucci, who recruited her to work in the Weld/Cellucci administration and who introduced her to her husband, Jim Kane, chairman of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen, to be hard on the issues and soft of the people.

“While there are deeply held beliefs, personal experiences and interactions that govern issues and the relationships among the many members here, I plan to chart my own course. I will seek to work with any and all across the political spectrum who prioritize action over inaction, results over rhetoric and reform over increased revenue,” Kane said.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Kane took her seat on the House floor to listen to fellow newly sworn in Representative from East Boston Adrian Madaro make his maiden speech. Hannah’s first day included attending a joint caucus where the Boston 2014 group presented an update on the Olympic bid planning. The House later returned to formal session, voting to enact $200 million in Chapter 90 funds for improvements to roads and bridges across the Commonwealth. This funding provides $988,959 in additional funding to Shrewsbury and $780,403 to Westborough.
