Local Students Present Research at Assumption College's Undergraduate Symposium

Student researchers discuss academic findings.

Several Shrewsbury students presented the results of long-term academic projects at Assumption College's recent Undergraduate Symposium on April 15-16. The Undergraduate Symposium is a celebration of student research and creative work in the arts, humanities, and sciences.

Julie Haggerty, class of 2013, presented her project: "The Role of Women in the Late Thirteenth Century Volsunga Saga." Julie examined the role of women in The Saga of the Volsungs, a story of old Norse mythology and human misfortune composed in Iceland during the late thirteenth century. She argued that the author perceives females as stronger than males at the time due to the strength and power of women emphasized in this saga.

Britni Hagopian, class of 2013, presented her project: "Identification of an Unknown Bacterium." Britni worked with classmate Allison O'Malley and identified an unknown bacterium as a close relative of Bacillus Pumilius by using structural stains, metabolic tests, and molecular sequencing. Their poster won for Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
