Man Allegedly Attempts Housebreaks, Steals Car, Flees on Foot

The man allegedly used a stolen car and triedto break into homes in the Shrewsbury area, and posed as a sheriff's officer during the spree.

SHREWSBURY, MA—A Worcester man is chasing assault and breaking and entering charges after police say he allegedly broke into residences in a neighborhood of Shrewsbury.

On Monday, May 16, at 5:52 p.m. Shrewsbury police responded to a residence on Balsam Circle for a suspicious male in the rear of the house who had fled on foot before police arrived.

Based on a description, they searched the area, and also found a stolen motor vehicle on Rawson Hill Drive that police say the suspect had used. A short distance from the car, the suspect broke into a residence and was scared off by the homeowner, according to police. He fled to another neighborhood half a mile away onto Colonial Drive, where he allegedly approached the residence and pretended to be a Sheriff's Officer serving paperwork. The resident called 911.

The suspect then fled to another residential neighborhood approximately a half mile away onto Colonial Drive and approached a residence where he identified himself as a Sheriffs Officer and said he was serving paperwork. That resident immediately called 911 and the suspect fled on foot. He then hit another residence on Colonial Drive, breaking in to the garage, stole a vehicle, and fled in the vehicle.

While driving on Colonial Drive, he nearly hit officer Matthew Caola of Shrewsbury police who was on foot looking.

Officers pursued the suspect from Colonial to Route 140 North into Boylston, where the suspect drove the car off the road by Wachusetts Reservoice, and then fled on foot into the woods, where he was apprehended.

Shuyler D. Gibson, 32, 1059 Main St., Worcester, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop, speeding, resisting arrest, operating with a suspended license

No one was injured as a result of the incident. He was then transported to the Shrewsbury Police Department for booking.
