Shrewsbury Honors Beloved Resident Ahead Of 100th Birthday

SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury Select Board on Tuesday reviewed and approved a proclamation celebrating the 100th birthday of longtime community benefactor Barbara “Babs” Donahue, recognizing decades of contributions that have helped shape the town.

Select Board member Theresa Flynn praised Donahue’s lasting impact on Shrewsbury residents and public safety services during the discussion of Article 7 on the board’s agenda.

“Mrs. Donahue has been a dedicated benefactor of the town of Shrewsbury for many years,” Flynn said. “Her generous contributions have made a longstanding impact on the quality of life for Shrewsbury residents.”

Flynn highlighted several major projects and donations supported by Donahue over the years, including the Donahue Rowing Center, the fountains at Dean Park, the town’s fire rescue boat, two hovercrafts and multiple pieces of life-saving equipment for the Shrewsbury Fire Department.

“We are grateful for Mrs. Donahue’s exceptional contributions to Shrewsbury,” Flynn said. “I feel like I’m safe saying that we’re all proud to play this small part in recognizing her generosity and thoughtfulness.”

The Donahue family name is prominently connected to several community and recreational amenities in Shrewsbury, particularly through support of parks, emergency response initiatives and youth athletics.

The proclamation comes as Donahue approaches her 100th birthday on Sunday, marking a century that town officials said has been defined by philanthropy and civic generosity.
