Shrewsbury Local Revenue Exceeds Budget By $2.6 Million

SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury closed fiscal year 2026 in a strong financial position despite higher weather response and utility costs.

Local receipts exceeded projections by about $2.6 million, Director of Fiscal Planning Alexandria Martinez told the Select Board on Tuesday during a presentation on the town’s year-end finances. Unspent departmental funds and excess local receipts will return to the town’s free cash balance.

Free cash totaled 5.69 percent of the general fund balance, exceeding the Board’s 5 percent target. The funding helps the town maintain fiscal stability and pay for capital projects.

Local receipts are revenue collected from sources other than property taxes, including motor vehicle excise taxes, building permit fees and investment income.

The town spent 99.49 percent of its fiscal 2026 budget, up from 98.62 percent in fiscal 2025. The increase was largely tied to greater weather-related demands, including snow response, along with higher utility costs for municipal buildings.

Despite these costs, town officials said all departments remained within budget.
