SHREWSBURY, MA — The Board of Selectmen this week voted to enter into an agreement with a developer to build a 55-unit mixed-use project at the former Beal School site.

The former Beal Early Childhood Center, located at 1-7 Maple Ave., closed in 2021, leaving the town center area with the chance for a new economic development project. The town had been planning to reuse the site since 2017, when the Board of Selectmen approved a planning process for the Beal site.

In 2020, Town Meeting approved selling the site, and a rezone of the town center area for mixed-use developments.

The developer selected this week, Civico Greenly, will buy the site for $250,000 for a development with 48 market-rate units, seven affordable units and about 7,000 square feet of commercial space, according to the town. There will also be more than half an acre of open space at the site, and parking spots set aside for public use.

Civico Greenly has developed a variety of suburban housing projects across Massachusetts, including mixed-use projects in Maynard, Reading and Lincoln.
