Shrewsbury Route 20 Project Gets Nearly $10M Federal Boost

SHREWSBURY, MA — A planned overhaul of Route 20 through Shrewsbury and Northborough will receive nearly $10 million in additional federal funding.

The $9.8 million award will support the rehabilitation and widening of Route 20 from Route 9 to South Street, Gov. Maura Healey announced on Thursday. The project is intended to improve traffic flow as well as pedestrian and bicycle access along the corridor.

Planned work extends from the South Street and Green Street intersection in Shrewsbury to just beyond the Valente Drive intersection in Northborough. Improvements will include an additional eastbound travel lane, turn lanes, sidewalks, shared-use paths and grass buffers.

The project also calls for a center median, two roundabouts and reconstruction of the traffic signal at South Street and Green Street. It also includes retaining walls and stormwater management improvements.

More Than $150 Million For Projects In MA

The local award is part of $153 million secured for 16 MassDOT and MBTA projects across Massachusetts.

The money comes through the Federal Highway Administration’s annual redistribution process, which makes funds available when other states and federal programs are unable to use them.

Massachusetts was eligible to compete for the funding because the selected transportation projects were ready to advance, according to the Healey administration.

“We go after every federal dollar available because every dollar we bring back to Massachusetts means we can do more for our residents and communities,” said Gov. Healey. “This $153 million will help us improve roads and bridges, make it safer to walk and bike, and invest in public transportation across the state.
