Shrewsbury Student-Athlete Recognized Among Top MA Scholar-Athletes: Boston Globe

Boston College-bound Drew O'Connell was recognized for achievements in athletics, academics and community service.

SHREWSBURY, MA — A Shrewsbury High School senior has been named one of the 2025-26 Globe Foundation/Richard J. Phelps Scholar-Athletes.

Drew O’Connell, who plans to attend Boston College, was selected as a District 2-3 honoree in the annual program, which recognizes standout high school seniors for athletics, academics and community involvement, according to The Boston Globe.

O’Connell was a three-sport captain at Shrewsbury, competing in golf, hockey and baseball. He averaged 40.2 in golf, posted 16 points as a hockey defenseman and was a two-way catcher.

In the classroom, O’Connell earned a 4.90 GPA, placing him in the top 5 percent of his class of 500 students.

O’Connell also served as student director of operations for the annual Soup-er Bowl Community Event and was a board member of the school’s Mentor Volunteer Program.

The Globe Foundation/Richard J. Phelps Scholar-Athlete program honors seniors from MIAA districts, Boston and Eastern Massachusetts prep schools, according to the Globe. Each honoree receives a scholarship toward college tuition, according to the Globe.
