Shrewsbury's Flint Pond To Close For Invasive Weed Treatment

SHREWSBURY, MA — Flint Pond will close to recreation on Monday as crews target an invasive fanwort infestation.

The Lake Quinsigamond Commission will conduct a targeted management project on Monday using the herbicide Sonar One. Swimming, boating, and fishing in Flint Pond will be suspended for the day, with normal water recreation resuming on Tuesday, according to the public notice.

Residents should not pump pond water for lawns, flower beds or gardens until Aug. 7 because the herbicide may damage landscaping during that period, according to the town.

Fanwort is a submerged invasive aquatic plant that can form dense mats on the water surface and impede boaters, anglers, water skiers and swimmers. The state's Department of Conservation and Recreation says fluridone, the active ingredient in Sonar One, is the most effective herbicide for controlling fanwort.
