When the Governor Texts You to Shave Your Head, You Do: Matt Beaton Goes Under the Razor for Cancer Research

Matthew Beaton joined hundreds of others in the annual shave your head or beard event to benefit Dana-Farber Institute.

MASSACHUSETTS — "So, this is what happens when the governor texts you and and asks you to shave your head for a great cause," wrote Matt Beaton, secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. "I actually think I like it. High and tight."

Sec. Beaton, who is from Shrewsbury, joined hundreds more in the Saving by Shaving event spearheaded by Granite Telecommunications, a company that raised $4.25 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. More than 700 Granite employees joined Granite's CEO Rob Hale, Gov. Charlie Baker, Quincy Mayor Tom Koch; Greg Hill, host of the Morning Show on WAAF in Boston and founder of the Greg Hill Foundation; Ken Casey, bassist and lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys; and many more.

The event began two years ago when Hale joked that if an employee shaved his beard, he'd give $1,000 to Dana-Farber, reports Reuters. That first year, 428 of the employees shaved their heads or beards to donate to Locks of Love, and Dana-Farber trustee Judy Hale donated more than $2.2 million to Dana-Farber.
