SOMERVILLE, MA — The city will hold two public events this month to honor veterans, with a Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 16, and a remembrance ceremony on Monday, May 25.
The city said this year’s event timeline is a special observance of Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Somerville City Hall on 93 Highland Ave.
The procession will head west on Highland Avenue, then turn onto Cedar Street, continue to Franey Road, and end at Trum Field on Broadway. Mayor Jake Wilson is encouraging residents to watch along the route through salutes, waves, and cheers.
Leading this year’s procession as grand marshals are Marine Corps Vietnam veteran honoree and Somerville resident Leo S. Mingace, along with members of the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., including New England Region Secretary Marion Dennehy. Accessibility accommodations for the parade include 10 temporary accessible parking spaces in the rear parking lot at the Somerville Armory on 191 Highland Ave. A viewing area will also be available along Highland Avenue at the armory on a first-come, first-served basis.
The city’s annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony is set for 11 a.m. on May 25 at Somerville Veterans Cemetery located between Alewife Brook Parkway and North Street. The city said community members, veterans and city officials will gather there to honor people who died in military service.
The ceremony will include remarks from Wilson and Director of Veterans Services Jerome Thomas. Temporary accessible parking spaces will be available on the cemetery side of Broadway.
Both events will be held regardless of weather.
The ceremony will be videotaped by Somerville’s CityTV team and broadcast after the event on GovTV on RCN channels 13 or 613, Comcast channel 22, and on the city’s YouTube channel.
