SOMERVILLE, MA — Residents in one neighborhood say repeated power outages have left them without air conditioning during this week's extreme heat, according to a report from Boston 25 News.
The outages have affected homes near Highland Avenue, where residents have experienced multiple interruptions since April. This week, some outages lasted overnight before power was restored, only for residents to receive notice that another planned outage would soon follow.
Resident Miriam Ross-Hirsch said the repeated outages have made it difficult to keep homes cool with window air conditioning units and raised concerns for elderly residents, people with medical conditions, and pet owners during the heat wave.
An Eversource spokesperson reportedly said that engineers determined the work causing the outages was critical and that the maintenance has since been completed. The utility added that the ongoing extreme heat continues to place added strain on the electric system and could lead to additional outages.
