SOMERVILLE, MA — A regional coworking company is returning to Somerville's Union Square with a new location next to the MBTA Green Line station, marking its first presence in the neighborhood since closing its previous space.
Workbar announced Tuesday that it will open a coworking space at 50 Prospect St., part of the mixed-use development adjacent to Union Square Station. The approximately 10,000-square-foot location is expected to open in late fall 2026 and will feature private offices, reservable meeting rooms and the company's signature activity-based workspaces. The company previously operated a Union Square location that opened in 2015.
Founded in Boston in 2009, Workbar has grown into a network of coworking spaces across Greater Boston serving hybrid workers, remote employees and businesses. The Union Square location follows the company's recent expansion in Needham and plans for another new location in Harvard Square as demand for flexible workspaces continues to increase throughout the region.
"We're excited to be back in Union Square," CEO Sarah Travers said. "Union Square is quickly becoming a hub for innovation and growth, and Workbar is betting on its continued transformation. As a Boston-born-and-built company ourselves, we're proud to invest in the businesses and professionals that call this community home."
Mayor Jake Wilson said Workbar's return reflects the continued momentum in Union Square as the neighborhood grows around new transit access, housing, public spaces and commercial development.
"Union Square has long been a place where small businesses, entrepreneurs, artists, researchers, and neighbors come together," Wilson said. "As the district continues to grow around transit, new housing, public space, and commercial activity, flexible workspaces can help support the people and ideas that keep Somerville's local economy moving forward."
Workbar is partnering with USQ on the new location, continuing a relationship that dates back to its original Union Square workspace. USQ President Greg Karczewski said the developer has received dozens of requests over the past year for flexible office space with convenient access to both the neighborhood and the Green Line.
The new coworking space will occupy part of the broader USQ redevelopment, a 20-acre transit-oriented project surrounding Union Square Station that is planned to include more than 2.3 million square feet of laboratory and office space, about 1,000 housing units, retail space, a hotel and new public gathering areas. The Workbar location will be housed within the new 50 Prospect St. mixed-use building.
Company officials said Greater Boston continues to outpace the national average for demand for flexible workspaces, a trend they believe will continue as businesses and employees seek offices closer to where they live and work.
