Annual Fluff Festival Returning To Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MA — One of the city's stickiest annual traditions is returning next month, bringing food, live entertainment, games and other activities to Union Square.

The What the Fluff? Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Union Square.

This year's festival, themed "Legally Fluff: A Toast to Union Square," will mark the 21st year of the celebration. The event will feature live music, Fluff-filled creations, sticky games, local vendors, and other activities and surprises. A full schedule for this year's festival has not yet been announced.

The festival celebrates Somerville's connection to Marshmallow Fluff, which dates back to 1917, when Archibald Query created the marshmallow spread in his Somerville kitchen and sold it door-to-door. Query later sold the recipe to H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower, who went on to produce the spread.

The What the Fluff? Festival was created decades later to celebrate the city's connection to the famous marshmallow spread and has since grown into an annual Union Square tradition featuring food, entertainment and Fluff-themed activities.

Past celebrations have included Fluff-inspired dishes, live performances and unusual competitions and games, including Fluff jousting.

Union Square Main Streets is currently seeking food, craft, and art vendors for this year's event, with organizers encouraging Fluff- and Somerville-themed products and specials.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to take the Green Line to Union Square, as parking near the festival is limited. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place the following day.
