1. City and Somerville Homeless Coalition Activate Emergency Fund for Fire Victims; Call for Community Donations (thesomervillenewsweekly.blog) — Somerville officials and the Somerville Homeless Coalition have activated an Emergency Displacement Fund to help Dartmouth Street fire victims who lost their homes and belongings. Residents are urged to make financial donations online to support neighbors' immediate needs like housing, clothing, food, and medicine, reinforcing Somerville's tradition of taking care of its own community members.

2. An East Somerville laundromat transforms into an artwork gallery (fooshya.com) — An East Somerville laundromat on Broadway has been transformed into a temporary gallery for a photography and audio exhibit celebrating the Unidos dual-language program at East Somerville Community School. Through October 15, residents can see black‑and‑white portraits of students and families, hear their stories via QR codes, and reflect on belonging, language access, and immigrant life in Somerville's most diverse neighborhood.

3. Commission for Disabled People holds September monthly meeting (thesomervilletimes.com) — Somerville's Commission for Persons with Disabilities recently met online to fund inclusive programs, including a bike camp, a virtual dance class led by a wheelchair-using performer, and scholarships for local high school students. Their votes direct thousands of dollars toward accessible recreation and education opportunities that Somerville residents with disabilities and their families can benefit from in the coming year.

4. Community Cooks has been feeding the community for more than three decades (wcvb.com) — A Somerville-based nonprofit called Community Cooks has spent more than 30 years connecting local home cooks with shelters, domestic violence programs, and recovery centers to fight food insecurity. Nearly 900 volunteers, many from Somerville, each prepare a monthly dish that becomes part of full meals for partner agencies, showing how small, neighbor-to-neighbor efforts can add up to a major community safety net.

5. Planting Green Roofs for Biophilic Effects (livingarchitecturemonitor.com) — Somerville gets a prominent shout-out for its award-winning CALA roof gardens, which create nearly 29,000 square feet of public green refuge using native trees, shrubs, and secluded seating alcoves. The piece explains how projects like CALA, along with examples in California and elsewhere, use biophilic design to make dense urban spaces feel more restorative, comfortable, and connected to nature.
