Somerville Hiker Rescued From New Hampshire Mountain

This woman's injury proved too severe to make it down the mountain without help.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A local woman was rescued after running into trouble while hiking on a New Hampshire mountain this past weekend, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Somerville resident Sara Grube, 28, was hiking the White Dot Trail at Monadnock State Park on Saturday, Sept. 19, when she injured her lower leg while ascending the mountain. Grube's companion contacted Mountain Patrol Rangers at approximately 12:27 p.m. asking for assistance.

Rangers reached Grube above the Upper Junction at approximately 1 p.m. and began providing medical aid. Due to the distance from the bottom of the mountain, rangers initially attempted to help Grube walk down under her own power before determining her injury would require rescuers to carry her out. Conservation Officers were notified at approximately 4:15 p.m., and additional help was requested from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and fire departments in Jaffrey, Peterborough, Troy and Marlborough.

Grube was placed into a litter and carried down the White Dot Trail before rescuers continued onto the Paradise Valley, Purgatory and Side Foot trails. The route covered just under one mile of what Fish and Game described as "extremely difficult terrain." Rescuers reached Old Toll Road at approximately 8 p.m., where Grube was placed into a Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance and taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene for treatment.

Mount Monadnock stands 3,165 feet tall and is one of the most popular hiking destinations in New Hampshire. The White Dot Trail is one of the primary routes to the summit and covers approximately two miles from park headquarters. Fish and Game said its response to the rescue was funded through the state's Hike Safe Card and Search and Rescue Fund.
