3 Firefighters Injured Battling Somerville House Fire

SOMERVILLE, MA — Three firefighters were injured while battling a three-alarm fire at a vacant home in Somerville Thursday morning.

Crews responded to the fire at approximately 6:30 a.m. at 8-10 Park St. Heavy smoke and flames rose from the roof of the house as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Arriving fire companies encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement and all three upper floors of the house, which had been vacant for some time. The fire eventually burned through the roof, which collapsed. Firefighters were forced to evacuate the building when conditions became too unsafe to continue operating inside and extinguished the fire from the exterior using multiple hose lines and aerial ladders. City officials told Patch that the majority of the fire had been knocked down within two hours.

Two firefighters suffered serious hand injuries and were transported to the hospital, while a third firefighter suffered an ankle injury. Three alarms were ultimately sounded for the fire, bringing mutual aid to the scene from Cambridge, Boston, Chelsea, and Medford.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation.
