Boston Looks to Add 260 Wi-Fi Hotspots Throughout City

The Wi-Fi use will be free for the public.

As part of a $2.86 billion budget proposal approved by the City of Boston for the 2016 fiscal year, an initiative to make free, public Wi-Fi more available was signed off on.

There are currently 200 places scattered throughout Boston where residents can gain access to Wi-Fi services. Now, with a 4.4 percent increase in budget over the 2015 fiscal year, the plan is provide 260 hotspots come 2016.

The city’s wireless network is referred to Wicked Wi-Fi. It has been utilized by residents and businesses since its introduction in 2014 as a means of convenience and a way to save financially.

Roxbury, Downtown Boston and Dorchester are among the areas with the most accessible Wi-Fi connectivity.

This new initiative will focus on bringing Wi-Fi to the 20 main streets scattered across the city, Boston Common, Franklin Park and Moakley Park, among other public spots.
