So what on earth is bubble soccer? Exactly what it sounds like! The normal game of soccer, but much more challenging because it’s played inside of a bubble.

It involves players positioning themselves inside blow-up bubble balls. Players can smash into one another, all in an effort to score the most points. According to sportsmonkey.com, each team can not have more than six players on the field at one time, two of which must be female.

Tuesday was the first time the wild and whacky sport was introduced to the City of Boston. Social Boston Sports and BubbleBall Me joined together to host an introductory tournament.

“We are really happy with the turnout. People really want to try this,” Emily Walsh, a spokeswoman with Social Boston Sports told The Boston Globe.

Many described the activity as exhausting, considering the humid conditions in which the games were played in.

One participant told the Globe playing the game was like “bumper-cars-meets-soccer-meets-hockey.”

Social Boston Sports and BubbleBall Me will continue their bubble soccer tournament series on July 25. Registration is available at socialbostonsports.com.
