Mozart’s iconic Great
Mass in C Minor, K. 427 contrasts
in beautiful and surprising ways with Beethoven’s Elegiac Song, op. 118 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 in D Minor. The C
Minor Mass was unique in its time for the work’s magnificent choruses,
sensuous solo movements, and large ensemble. Paired with Mozart’s masterpiece
is Beethoven’s brief and tender Elegiac
Song—a musical gem often overlooked among Beethoven’s grander works—and
Haydn’s sumptuous Symphony No. 86.
Following the performance, all are welcome at a
free post-concert reception in Williams Hall.
