Crime Down in the South End Area in 2011
The number of incidents reported fell by 5 percent from 2010, according to preliminary data. However, burglaries increased by 22 percent.

The crime rate in the South End and its bordering communities dropped by 5 percent in 2011, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the Boston Police Department.
had 266 fewer incidents reported, 4,686 compared to the 4,952 in 2010, according to the data. The district primarily covers the South End but also reaches neighboring sections of Lower Roxbury, Back Bay and the Fenway.

The district matched a citywide trend, as Boston’s overall crime rate fell by 8 percent and 10 of the city’s 12 police districts saw a decrease in crime. Only Charlestown (District A-15) and Hyde Park (District E-18) bucked the trend, with increases of 11 and 1 percent, respectively.
In the South End’s district, crime fell in four categories – aggravated assault (20 percent), vehicle theft and attempted vehicle theft (9 percent), larceny and attempted larceny (7 percent) and robbery and attempted robbery (5 percent).

The district’s homicide and burglary and attempted burglary rates increased, however, while the number of rapes and attempted rapes reported remained even at 32.
D-4 Homicides
The South End’s district accounted for five of the city’s 62 reported homicides in 2011 (see WBUR’s homicide map). The district had one fewer homicide in 2010, while Boston had 12 more, 74.

D-4 Burglaries On the Rise
The number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the South End’s district increased by 22 percent, as 412 were reported in 2010 and 92 more in 2011, 504. The city overall saw 181 less burglaries and attempted burglaries in 2011, a 5 percent drop.
