The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is an iconic and pristine wilderness with lakes and forests stretching 1.2-million acres along the Minnesota-Canada border. With more than 250,000 annual visitors, it is the most visited wilderness area in the nation. Though protected and beloved by many, the BWCAW is under immense threat from proposed sulfide ore mining projects. While the proposed mines are just outside of the designated wilderness area, they are located near lakes and rivers that flow into the BWCAW, which could cause severe pollution in the watershed from acid mine drainage, contaminating it for centuries to come.
In August, National Geographic Adventurers of the Year Amy and Dave Freeman embarked on Paddle to DC, a 100-day, 2,000-mile expedition from Minnesota to Washington DC. They are traveling by canoe and sailboat to raise awareness and collect signatures to call on the government for more protection in the Boundary Waters watershed. Join us at Patagonia DC to welcome them as they arrive in DC to deliver the petition. Dave and Amy will tell stories, show slides and share a short film about their adventure.
