Stone Zoo Says Goodbye To Beloved Yak

STONEHAM, MA — One of Stone Zoo's longest-tenured and most recognizable residents has died.

Sengi, a yak that had lived at the Stoneham zoo since 2002, was humanely euthanized earlier this week after her health rapidly declined, according to Zoo New England. At 25 years old, she was considered geriatric and was believed to be the oldest yak living at any Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo.

Because of her age, Sengi had been receiving more frequent veterinary examinations. Zoo officials said her condition deteriorated Tuesday when she was no longer able to stand, and bloodwork showed significant changes, leading veterinarians and animal care staff to make the decision to euthanize her.

Known for her shaggy black coat, gentle temperament and love of back scratches, Sengi spent more than two decades at Stone Zoo and became a favorite among visitors, campers and staff. Earlier this year, she returned to the zoo's expanded Himalayan Highlands habitat following a renovation project that added a larger outdoor yard, a new barn and upgraded viewing areas for guests.

Stone Zoo, which opened in 1905, is operated by Zoo New England, the nonprofit organization that also manages Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. The 26-acre zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is home to dozens of species, including snow leopards, Mexican gray wolves, black bears, Canada lynx and reindeer. Sengi also appeared in Zoo New England educational programs and online videos introducing visitors to the animals that live in the Himalayan Highlands exhibit.

Zoo New England said Sengi "touched many people — guests, campers and staff alike" during her more than 20 years at Stone Zoo and invited visitors to share memories of her with the animal care team.
