Stoughton Police Launch School Bus Safety Initiative

STOUGHTON, MA — Stoughton police are increasing enforcement around school buses as students travel to and from school.

Operation Blue Bird began Wednesday and will continue throughout the school year, according to the Stoughton Police Department. Officers will monitor morning and afternoon pickup and drop-off routes for drivers who pass buses displaying flashing red lights while children board or exit.

Police vehicles may be visible near school bus stops during enforcement hours, the department said.

Passing a school bus with flashing red lights carries a $250 fine for a first offense in Massachusetts, police said. A second offense carries a $1,000 fine and six-month license revocation, while a third offense carries a $2,000 fine and one-year license revocation.

Police reminded motorists to slow down, remain alert and stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing.
