Bristol Woman Indicted In Crash That Killed Cranston Man

Massachusetts State police said John Souza, of Cranston was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty and died when his car was hit head on.

SWANSEA, MA — Five months after a fiery I-195 crash that killed John Souza, 38, of Cranston, a Bristol woman was indicted Wednesday for her alleged role in the crash.

Sarah Bergenholtz, 39, of Bristol was indicted on charges of motor vehicle homicide, vehicular manslaughter and operating under the influence of alcohol.

Massachusetts State police said Souza was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty and died when his car was hit head on at about 2:10 a.m., May 10 on Interstate 195 in Swansea. The Jeep burst into flames, and the driver was trapped.

Prosecutors said Bergenholtz was driving her Volkswagen Touareg the wrong way near Exit 3 when her car collided with Souza's Jeep.

An arraignment date has not been set, WPRI 12 reported after speaking with the district attorney's office. Bergenholtz suffered serious injuries and has been in the hospital ever since.
