Camuso-Sullivan Goes Distance and Pires Goes Yard to pace Post 89!

Stoughton Post 89 improved to 7-4 on the season with a 13-3 victory against Cohasset Post 118 on Sunday night.  Connor Camuso-Sulivan improved to 2-0 on the season, going the distance while allowing just 1 earned run and 8 hits while striking out 10 batters.  
"Connor was ahead of batters all night and he had great control," remarked Coach Kevin McCormick.  "Our original starting pitcher (Pat Raeke) hurt his foot earlier in the day, so Connor got the emergency start and really bailed us out!"

Post 89 pounded out 23 hits, led by center fielder, Jovani Pires who was 5 for 5, including a long 3-run homer run to left field in the second inning.  Pires finished with 4 RBI on the day and scored 3 times.  Multiple hit games were turned in by Sam Werman (4 for 5), Nic Panasci (3 hits), Jake Gibb (3 hits, 2 RBI, 2 Runs), Matt Provost (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Camuso-Sullivan (2 hits, RBI, 2 Runs scored).  Camuso-Sullivan drew more praise from his coaches, this time for an at bat that produced an out.  After hitting the ball on the nose in the 5th inning that resulted in a double play, he came up in the 7th with 2 on and none out and promptly smashed a hard 2 hopper right at the second baseman.   Despite leading 10-3 at the time,  Camuso-Sullivan, who had thrown over 85 pitches to that point, hustled right out of the box and launched himself at the bag as he approached first base, sliding in safely to just beat the return throw to negate the double play. Instead of a potential rally killing double play, he ignited a rally that opened the door for 3 more runs and a commanding 13-3 lead.  

Manager Jim Derochea took notice. "Connor's hustle on that play showed the kind of gritty player he is.  Despite the score and despite hitting both balls on the nose, he didn't want to 'let his teammates down' by hitting into a double play there and he busted his tail right out of the box to make sure he beat that throw.  I love that kind of hustle and desire as much as any player's talent because because  it shows true character, that the player has respect for the game, a desire to not let his teammates down and a passion to win! That is how I always want my players to play on every play and he set the tone for his teammates with his effort on that one."  

There were some solid defensive plays turned in by Post 89 as well including Right Fielder, Nic Panasci who had a rare 2 assists in the same inning.  First, Nic gunned down a runner at second who tried to stretch a single into a double.  Then Panasci ended the inning by tracking down a base hit in the gap and relaying it to 2nd baseman Will McGrath, who then threw a strike to Catcher, Jake Gibb to nail a runner at the plate. Gibb contributed a defensive gem of his own in the 7th inning, this time with his arm as he picked off a Cohasset base runner who had strayed of 2nd base, to end the game.

Post 89 next plays on Monday against Braintree Post 86 at 5:45pm at Stoughton High School.  On Wednesday, Post 89 travels to Milton (Cunningham Park) and then to Sumner Field in Holbrook on Friday.  Both away contests are slated for 5:45pm starts.
