Dance Around the World at Stoughton Senior/Youth Center
The Stoughton Cultural Council is offering a chance to learn dances from across the globe.

From Dr. Erdem Ural:
"Dance Around the World" will be held at the Stoughton Senior Center on April 1 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
In this event, renowned dance leader Marcie Van Cleave will teach participants folk dances from
different parts of the world. Marcie is the Executive Director of Folk Arts Center of New England, and is
well known for generating a sense of fun that is contagious and captivates children and adults alike,
producing peals of laughter all around. Authentic music will be provided, live, by Tom Pixton, Barbara
Pixton, and Catherine Miller.

Folk dances are the traditional social dances of ethnic groups, rural or urban, from all over the world.
These are the dances done whenever groups come together – to celebrate weddings, crop plantings and
harvests, Saints’ days, and religious milestones, for examples. Dancing and music-making attracts
participants of all ages, from parents and children to seniors.
According to Ms Van Cleave, our world tour through dance might include material from: Israel, Central
and Eastern Europe, the United States and Canada, the Mediterranean region, and Mexico and South
America.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Stoughton Cultural Council, a local agency which is
supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and the Folk Arts Center of New
England, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the participation in the traditional folk arts of
different cultures.
