Off-Duty Officer's Report Leads To Randolph Man's Arrest

Police say Dewayne Morris fired his gun outside a club to scare a man who was involved an in an altercation.

BOSTON, MA — A Randolph man will face weapons charges in Boston partially because of an off-duty officer, police said.

Dewayne Morris, 31, was arrested early Monday morning and charged with disturbing the peace, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling/building, and carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the Boston Police Department.

At about 12:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired near Beach and Lincoln streets. An off-duty officer called 911 and reported that he heard the shots while walking near Savvor Lounge and saw a white BMW flee the area towards Surface Road. Several 911 callers reported seeing a black male wearing an orange shirt brandishing a firearm outside Savvor Lounge.

Moments later, officers on Interstate 93 North near exit 16 found a white BMW with a partial plate that matched the plate described by the off-duty officer. The officers on the highway pulled over the vehicle and ordered the three occupants to exit the car given the nature of the incident involving a firearm. Inside the vehicle on the backseat, officers observed a black pistol holster on top of a green jacket with a bright orange liner matching the description given by the 911 callers, police said.

A K9 sweep of the car turned up an unloaded 9mm Ruger LC9s from the pouch. The backseat passenger, identified as Morris, said he possessed a license to carry, which officers confirmed, but they also noted that Morris allegedly had an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and appeared intoxicated. Officers recovered the firearm, the holster, the jacket, and the firearm’s magazine from under the jacket. Shell casings were recovered at the scene near Beach and Utica streets.

Police later learned that Morris was allegedly involved in an altercation with a man inside the club and when confronted by the man outside, Morris fired the pistol into the air to scare him away, before jumping into the backseat of the vehicle and leaving the area.

The vehicle driver and other passenger were identified and released by police.
