The art students of Judith Murray Smith are displaying over 50 drawings and paintings at the Stoughton Public Library Staircase Gallery for the month of April.  Students participate in Kreative Kids (ages 5-10) and Talented Teens (ages 10-18) at the Childrens Museum in Easton; and the Sunday Session (6-18) at the Felos Art Center in Stoughton. Pencil, charcoal, prismacolor colored pencil, acrylic, and watercolor are used to create images from familiar objects such as shoes, toys and tools. Emphasis is placed on direct observation, and right/left brain drawing.  This year, additional focus was placed on painting in the styles of Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse and Georgia O’Keeffe. Positive/negative thinking, composition and independent planning are always emphasized.  As each student’s technical skills advance, development of personal themes is encouraged.

Mrs. Smith and her family sponsor an annual competition to honor the memory of her mother; school librarian Margaret Murray. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners in the Teen Division, while students in the Pre-teen and Elementary Divisions will receive art lessons or art supplies.
