Every Breath you Take

Where do you stand on the issue of privacy? I’m not a gambling woman, but I would bet that the majority of Americans are thinking about or discussing their views on privacy.  This, of course, is most likely because of the whole Edward Snowden and NSA leak.  Snowden is being charged with espionage and many Americans were shocked to find out that the government was using surveillance.  Snowden currently has temporary asylum in Russia after seeking asylum from a majority of other countries and being denied.

I’m not a legal scholar. I’m a graduate student in political science with a Bachelor’s in English from a state university. What I’m saying is that everything that I’m about to say is based on my own opinions and that I’m not an expert. I’ve read the Constitution. I’ve read it more than a couple of times. I’ve even taken multiple Constitutional Law courses in my political science major in undergrad.  But you see the thing is, I just can’t find the Amendment where it says, we the people are guaranteed a right to privacy. I mean sure I can find it implied in certain Amendments, but as I said I’m not a legal scholar and I’m not a psychic. Therefore, I don’t think I’m going to read between the lines on what our forefathers meant when they wrote the Constitution. Honestly, I don’t see the problem with the government keeping an eye on the people. I have nothing to hide. Well except a slightly embarrassing and unnecessary Facebook addiction. I’m also sick of liberals and conservatives picking and choosing which Amendments they want to follow and which they don’t. It’s the Constitution, I believe the government should follow the writings of the entire thing, but that’s just me. Therefore, while there may be an expectation of privacy, I don’t believe there should be. If you have nothing to hide then consider this: some people do. Those people are being monitored and rather than completing an elaborate, awful, anti-America suicide mission possibly killing thousands of Americans, they are stopped because their plan was found under the surveillance of the government. I know many people will disagree with my belief, but that’s their right. It’s also mine to write about it and that my friends is because of the First Amendment.
