'Lucky Wife Lucky Life': Man Wins $1M 4 Months After She Does

She won a $1 million prize from Publishers Clearing House. Not to be outdone, he won $1 million on a scratch ticket.

RANDOLPH, MA — Feeling lucky? It probably doesn't compare to the winning streak this Randolph couple is on.

It started over the summer when Publishers Clearing House surprised Jane Goodwin with a $1 million check while she was on her way to a boat cruise to Provincetown. Four months later, she joined her better half, Robert Goodwin, for a trip to Massachusetts Lottery Headquarters in Braintree to collect a $1 million scratch ticket prize.

So how did this odds-defying double win happen? It started Aug. 31 when PCH representatives came to the Goodwins' house with the giant check, balloons, and all the ballyhoo that they are known for. The only problem was when they arrived, they learned that Jane was out shopping for the day. Robert told the crew where she was and they were able to find Jane and present her with her prize.

“They made the announcement over the loudspeaker as we docked, asking if anyone on the boat played Publishers Clearing House. I thought they were just playing a game with us! I was chatting with my friend and I explained to her that I do. She asked why I entered and I said, ‘well if someone’s got to win, it might as well be me!’” Jane told PHC.

The presentation was recorded by PHC.

The prize was a good haul for anyone, but thanks to a “$1,000,000 Platinum Payout” scratch ticket bought by Robert, they doubled their winnings. Robert opted to take the cash option and received a one-time payment of $650,000.

The Goodwins indicated that they intend to use their new winnings to purchase a home in an over-55 community so they can say goodbye to all that winter shoveling.

Jane also had an eye on the future when she won her prize, saying at the time that she saw her winnings as a "nice nest egg on top of our retirement."
