A proposed 21.2-mile natural gas pipeline that would start in Milford and go through Stoughton is now in the early stages of development.

Announced last fall by Spectra Energy, the Access Northeast project would bring up to 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day to the region’s gas-fired power plants according to the Metrowest Daily News. The pipe would reportedly save electric customers $1 billion each year.

The project would use an existing underground gas transmission system, going through Medway, Franklin, Bellingham, Norfolk, Millis, Walpole, Sharon, Canton and Stoughton.
