Randolph Man Found Guilty of 2010 Stoughton Murder

John M. Rooney, 52, of Randolph, has been found guilty of first degree murder.

STOUGHTON, MA - A Randolph man has been found guilty of killing a Stoughton man.

John M. Rooney, 52, was convicted in Dedham Superior Court of first degree murder and all other indictments against him for the stabbing death of Georgios Kontsas, 78, in Kontsas’ Stoughton home in February 2010, according to the Norfolk District Attorney's office. Prior to the murder, Rooney burst into the home and demanded money from Kontsas' wife Dorothea Kontsas. Georgios. Kontsas was killed when he came to the defense of his wife.

The jury deliberated for less than three days before returning with an unanimous verdict shortly after 3 p.m. Monday.

Rooney was also convicted of two counts of home invasion, two counts of armed assault in a dwelling with intent to murder, one count of armed assault with intent to murder a person over 60, one count of armed assault with intent to rob a person over sixty, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon against a person over 60.

The case was retried after the initial trial resulted in a hung jury in 2014. The retrial began 10 weeks ago and the jury heard nine weeks of testimony.

A first degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Rooney is scheduled to be sentenced at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Norfolk Superior Court.
