Sharon Man Charged With Armed Robberies In Stoughton, Canton

CANTON, MA — Police have arrestedt a Sharon man accused of robbing a Stoughton convenience store and Canton laundromat with a meat cleaver. Matthew Kiernan, 18, was arraigned in Stoughton District Court Tuesday and was charged with armed robbery while masked, assault to commit a felony, larceny from a person, breaking and entering a building at night, malicious damage of property, possession of burglarious tools, and resisting arrest.

Around 10:20 pm., on May 21, Kiernan, dressed in all black and armed with a butchers knife, stormed into the Wash n Dry on Washington Street and demanded cash, police said. Then on Sunday, he broke into Kelly's Place Restaurant on Washington Street, and later that night, police said he robbed Seasons, a convenience store and gas station on Sharon Street in Stoughton. Police said the the suspect chased the cashier behind the counter and forced the employee to empty the register.

After both robberies, witnesses saw Kiernan get away on an electric bicycle.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, Canton police said they saw Kiernan riding an electric bike on Washington Street. Police said he was "acting suspiciously" and also matched the description of the robbery suspect. Kiernan led officers on a chase, but it ended quickly after he hot the curb and fell of his bike, police said. Kiernan was arraigned and is due back in court at a later date.
