Stoughton 2016 MCAS Results Show Slight Decrease

English is flat, and math and science are down.

STOUGHTON, MA — The 2015 MCAS results are in and Stoughton’s scores are very close to the results from last year’s exam. Below are the results for the 10th-grade tests in math, English, and science.

English: 94 percent of students scored either advanced or proficient on the exam, the exact same as last year. This year, 41 percent scored advance compared to 50 percent last year. In proficient, the percentage is up from 44 percent to 52 percent. Only 6 percent scored either failing or needs improvement.

Math: The number of students in the advance and proficient categories is slightly down from 81 percent to 79 percent. The number of students scoring in the advance category is up from 51 percent to 55 percent. The number amount of students scoring in the proficient category is down from 30 percent to 12 percent. About 12 percent of students scored needs improvement or warning/failing.

Science: Students scoring advance or proficient is down from 88 percent to 82. Advance students are up from 30 percent to 38 while proficient students are down from 58 percent to 44 percent. Fifteen percent of students scored either needs improvement or warning/failing.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 mandates that every student be proficient in English language arts and math by 2014. In Massachusetts, this proficiency is measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).

A school must improve in proficiency each year based on adequate yearly progress (AYP). In Massachusetts, AYP is determined by student performance on various parts of the MCAS.
