Stoughton 8th Grader Helps Feed Those In Need
Julie Powers, an eighth-grader from Stoughton, put a little blue food pantry on Route 138 to help feed those in need.

STOUGHTON, MA — A Stoughton eighth-grader said she took inspiration from little community library cabinets and is now using the idea to help feed the needy. Julie Powers, with the help of town officials in Sharon and Stoughton, set up a bright blue pantry on the side of Route 138 in front of a rental store. That pantry was stocked with food to make sure the homeless and others in need do not go without.
Powers told Boston 25 News her mother would tell her stories about how her grandfather used to sometimes have to go hungry, and it made her want to do something to help others. Before setting up the pantry, Powers needed the town's approval and clearance from the Board of Health, which she not only got, but the towns of Stoughton and Sharon also came together to get Powers the non-perishable canned goods she needed. Powers said she hopes people will continue to stop by and donate, but she also hopes the idea catches on in other towns.
"I think what we really want is for people to make these things themselves," Powers told Boston 25 News. "To hopefully get with a group or even by yourself, get some money, make more of these and spread the message."
