Stoughton Coronavirus: April Vaction Canceled

STOUGHTON, MA — School officials have canceled April vacation and will continue with virtual learning through next week.

If classes resume after the new coronavirus pandemic, the district now can have June 16 as the last day of school instead of June 22 while still being in accordance with state law that requires 180-day school years. As it stands, schools in Massachusetts are scheduled to re-open May 4.

Superintendent John Marcus said he was orginally against getting rid of April vacation, but his opinion changed after talking to families, staff and administrators in other school districts. He said there's been a lot of improvements to remote learning over the last two weeks and did not want to see that progress disrupted.

"We've heard from lots of folks that they really appreciate the structure that's been developed over the last couple weeks ...," Marcus said. "There's no where to go for April vacation, so having that structure in place is a really positive thing."
