Stoughton Coronavirus Update: Cases Rise To 56

STOUGHTON, MA — There are 56 positive cases of the new coronavirus in Stoughton as of Monday afternoon, according to the latest numbers from local health officials.

Town Manager Robin Muksian Grimm said the latest numbers could be higher because they don't yet include any numbers for Monday. As of Sunday afternoon, there were 1,271 cases of COVID-19 in Norfolk county.

The number of cases continues to rise across the state, and additional measures to stem its spread continue to be implemented. The governor has declared a Stay at Home advisory. All non-essential businesses have been closed, and Gov. Charlie Baker extended their closure until at least May 4. Parking lots at state beaches were also closed.

Grimm said employees at Town Hall will begin wearing mask starting Tuesday. Stoughton health officials said this comes as a recommendation from the CDC.

"The goal of the masks isn't to stop a person from contracting the virus as only the special N-95 masks are rated to prevent the virus from coming in, but rather to prevent those of us who may be carrying it asymptomatically from spreading it when we talk, breath, etc," Grimm said in a statement.

Grimm suggested residents check online for creative ways to make masks for those that don't have them.

Steven Leahy, former president of the Stoughton Art Association, painted one of his latest works on toilet paper and is raffling it off to benefit Doctors Without Borders.
