Stoughton Fire Awarded $1.3 Million Federal Grant

The SAFER grant will allow the department to hire more firefighters.

STOUGHTON, MA — The Stoughton Fire Department will be able to hire more firefighters thanks to a new federal grant.

Last week, the department was awarded a $1.3 million SAFER grant from FEMA. The grant will be used to hire eight more firefighters and have two ambulances staffed at all times, Chief Michael Laracy told the Enterprise.

The grant has been in the works for months. Last December, Laracy told the selectmen that he was applying for the grant with the goal of reaching 15 positions per shift. The 3-year grant calls for the federal government paying for 75 percent of the cost of the firefighters for the first two years and 25 percent for the third year.
