Sam Werman and Justin Hutchinson threw a combined 4-hitter as Post 89 beat Milton, 13-3 to improve to 8-5, just one game out of second place. Mike Gallagher had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, 4RBI nd scored 3 runs, while Matt Provost also had 3 hits and scored 3 runs while knocking in 2. Justin Hutchinson continued his torrid rookie season with 2 hits with 2 runs scored and Pat Jackman smacked 2 singles and scored 3 times as well.
The game was tight in the early going, with Stoughton holding a 4-2 lead through 3 innings, but their running game got going and they scored two in the 4th, one in the 6th inning and blew the game open in the top of the 7th inning by plating six runs. Stoughton also stole 11 bases to bring their total to 49 steals through 13 games while only being caught stealing twice for an astounding 96% success rate.
It took a few innings to get the running game going, but once it got going, the attack was relentless. Post 89 stole 11 bases on the night, led by Zach Gibb who swiped 4 bases for Stoughton. The team has now swiped 49 bases in just 13 games while only being caught stealing twice for an astounding 96% success rate. Stoughton third base coach, Kevin Gilbert on the teams running game, "We have been the most successful this season when we get guys on base and then get them in motion. It puts the pressure on the defense and it also affects the pitchers, who have to worry about our speed." Coach Kevin McCormick agreed, "We constantly have men in scoring position because of our running game and it definitely wears down our opponent. We have scored more than half of our runs from the 4th inning on," McCormick added in affirmation.
Post 89 ace, Sam Werman, allowed just 2 earned runs and just 3 hits in five innings of work, but he was uncharacteristically wild in the early going, walking 8 batters overall. Werman settled down and kept a scrappy Milton team at bay until the offense kicked into gear. Freshman, Justin Hutchinson was solid once again, pitching 2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to drop his ERA to 2.15 on the season. Sam Werman earned the win, improving his record to 4-1.
