Stoughton Names John Marcus Superintendent

John Marcus replaces superintendent Marguerite Rizzi, who's retiring after 10 years with the school district.

STOUGHTON, MA — After months of screening, interviewing, and narrowing down applicants, the school committee on Tuesday voted unanimously to name John Marcus the next superintendent.

Marcus currently serves as Sharon's assistant superintendent, but also has familiarity with the Stoughton public school district. He has worked as an administrator at the elementary and district levels in both Stoughton and Sharon.

"While we had multiple high caliber candidates to choose from, Dr. Marcus had an interesting combination of familiarity with the system and the town as well as significant outside experience at the central office level," school committee chair Molly Cochran said in a statement to Patch. "I believe that his values, perspective, and intellectual strengths will be of great service to our school district. "

Marcus was one of four finalist including former East Haven, Connecticut superintendent Portia Selene Bonner, Monomoy Regional High School principal William Burkhead, and Stoughton High School Principal Juliette Miller.

Superintendent Marguerite Rizzi retires in August after 10 years in the role. Her baseline salary this year is upwards of $193,000. Marcus will negotiate a salary with the school committee sometime in the next few days.
