Stoughton to Memorial Day Parade Moved Indoors

The ceremony will take place at the VFW.

The Memorial Day Parade honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The parade will begin forming at the Public Works on Central Street at 8:30AM and start at 9:00AM sharp. The route will go from Public Works to the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery for two ceremonies. From there the route will go to the Pearl Street Cemetery for a ceremony. The parade will then proceed to the Stoughton Town Hall for a ceremony and wreath laying at the Memorial Bell. The ceremonies there will begin at approximately 10:15AM. From there the parade will proceed through Stoughton Square to Faxon Veterans’ Memorial Park for ceremonies at the two memorials. The parade will then proceed to Washington Street and on to Evergreen Cemetery for two ceremonies at the GAR Lot and the American Legion Burial site.

Participants in the parade generally include the VFW Color Guard and Firing Detail, Veterans groups, the Police and Fire Departments, the High School Band, Town and State officials, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and possibly other groups. The ceremonies at the various sites include opening prayers, playing by the High School Band, an Honor Guard Firing Detail, the laying of wreaths and various speakers. Ceremonies this Memorial Day will include Sarah Doherty of the O’Donnell Middle School reading her award winning essay “What Freedom Means to Me” at Town Hall and the reciting of the Gettysburg Address at the GAR lot at Evergreen Cemetery. The parade will end at approximately 12:00 at which time you are cordially invited to a collation at the VFW at 837 Washington Street.

Memorial Square Dedications

The collation will be followed 3 Memorial Square Dedications. All are welcome to attend these moving ceremonies which are scheduled as follows:

  • At 1:15PM the intersection of Ledgebrook Avenue and Page Street will be dedicated to Dennis D. McCarthy.
  • At 2:00PM the intersection of Central Street and Central Drive will be dedicated to Robert Parsons.
  • At 2:45PM the intersection of Seaver Street and Chestnut Street will be dedicated to Ralph L. Anderson.
